Janice Sommerville is a Specialist Orthodontist
Janice received her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Otago. She spent a year as a Dental House Surgeon in Auckland prior to working as a General Dentist in London for several years.
Her interest in orthodontics led her to study in the United States at the University of Illinois, Chicago where she gained a M.S in orthodontics. Following graduation, Janice decided to stay in Chicago and completed the examinations to gain licensure as a dentist and subsequently as an orthodontist to be able to practice in the state of Illinois.
For the next few years, she combined a career of teaching orthodontics at the University of Illinois with private Orthodontic practice in the ‘loop’ in downtown Chicago.
This city practice was particularly adult oriented and stimulated an interest in the interdisciplinary treatment of adults, an interest which is particularly well catered for in the unique environment at 5 St Mark’s Road.
Janice returned to New Zealand and set up a sole orthodontic practice in Remuera, Auckland with the goal of continuing the same style of high quality orthodontic practice she was accustomed to providing in the US. A small practice was established in St Marks Clinic and relocated to 5 St Marks from the year 2000. The goals of providing a world-class orthodontic service with a highly trained team in a purpose-built quality environment have been achieved and every effort is made to continue to achieve these goals. The bonus of working alongside three other excellent Dental Specialists at 5 St Marks has made her ability to provide all round care more accessible.
Janice has contributed to the New Zealand Dental Profession having been President of the Auckland Dental Association, Committee member of the New Zealand Orthodontic association with responsibility for the Annual conferences, is currently a board member of the New Zealand Orthodontic Foundation for Education and Research and on the Dental Advisory Committee of the Postgraduate Medical Committee in the University of Auckland. A common thread among these commitments is a strong desire to support and encourage ongoing professional development and education.
Janice lives locally with her husband and two daughters.
